ORCA recognized by White House for work with veterans

HPS’ student group Organization for Reinforcement Contingencies with Animals (ORCA) received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for their work with veterans and military families.

Last summer, ORCA began partnering with Patriot PAWS, a Rockwall-based nonprofit organization that trains service dogs. Watch the WFAA video: UNT students help train service dogs for veterans.

The Corporation for National and Community Service gave the 2016 award, which was accompanied by a letter from former President Barack Obama.

“This partnership is a win-win for our students and for Patriot Paws,” said Jesús Rosales-Ruiz, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of HPS’ Behavior Analysis department, which houses ORCA. “The students get to share their skills, while continuing to learn more about animal training and behavior.”
