ASLP Research Opportunity

Are you between the ages of 40 and 85 years old and suspect you have hearing loss? If so, you may be a candidate for a new study at the University of North Texas Speech and Hearing Center.

What Are We Studying?

Our study will see how cognition, motivation, and emotion impact listening effort and whether these factors predict hearing aid acceptance and adoption in new hearing aid users.

What Will it Entail?

Qualifying subjects will undergo a series of behavioral and electrophysiological tests over the course of six months to assess listening effort and hearing aid success. Participants will receive up to $900 in gift cards.

Participants will be responsible for the cost of the initial hearing evaluation, the hearing aids, and any follow-up appointments. For more information, please email Erin.Schafer@unt.edu.

Steps to Participating in UNT Study: Impact of Listening Effort on Hearing Aid Adoption and Performance in Adults Ages 40-85 Years

Step 1: Are you a candidate, and do you want to purchase hearing aids from the UNT Speech and Hearing Center?

You will schedule and pay for an appointment for a hearing test at the UNT Speech and Hearing Center. If you need hearing aids, the UNT audiologist will give you an option to order and purchase hearing aids. You must purchase hearing aids through UNT to be a candidate for the study. After you sign a consent form, your records will be sent to the study group.

*Insurance benefits may or may not apply. Check with Becky at the front desk.

Step 2: Schedule and Attend Study Session #1

Before you receive your hearing aid, you will complete a series of hearing assessments, surveys, and non-invasive brain and eye response tests. After the research team is notified of your candidacy, you will receive an email from us to schedule Session 1. Testing will be approximately 6 hours and can be conducted over 1-2 days. You will receive a $300 gift card for completing this session.

Step 3: Schedule and attend an appointment for your hearing aid delivery with your UNT audiologist.

When you order your hearing aids, your UNT audiologist will help you schedule an appointment for your hearing aid fitting, approximately 2 weeks after your hearing test. Additional clinic appointments following the hearing aid fitting will be determined by UNT audiologists and will extend beyond the study.

*Purchasing hearing aids through the UNT clinic covers a year of audiological services.

Step 4: Schedule and Attend Study Session #2
Two months after your hearing aid fitting, you will schedule and complete the same tests as those in study session #1. Testing will be approximately 6 hours and can be conducted over 1-2 days. You must bring your hearing aids to the test session. You will receive a $300 gift card for completing this session.
Step 5: Schedule and Attend Study Session #3
Two months after Session #2, you will schedule and complete the same tests as those in study session #1. You must bring your hearing aids to the test session. Testing will be approximately 6 hours and can be conducted over 1-2 days. You will receive a $300 gift card for completing this session.
