First, tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Annie Lee, and I am an assistant professor in the Department of Public
Administration. I earned a Ph.D. in Planning and Public Policy from Rutgers University
and previously worked as a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University.
Why did you choose to study urban planning/public administration?
I am drawn to urban planning because of its direct connection to our living environment.
Urban planning is an interdisciplinary field that encompasses economic development,
community development, transportation, and housing. Experts from various fields collaborate
to examine urban problem and develop improvement plans that directly impact people's
living environments.
What are your main areas of research, and why did you choose those specific areas?
My research focuses on exploring economic development, labor, and income inequalities
from spatial perspectives. Understanding the spatial variations of these economic
issues is crucial for addressing and alleviating inequalities in our society.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
I particularly enjoy exploring a wide range of urban planning and policy issues with
my students and working together to find solutions to urban problems.
What do you hope your students gain from your courses?
I hope my students further develop their knowledge of public administration and urban
planning, along with acquiring a diverse set of practical skills that are crucial
for their careers after graduation.
What did you do before pursuing a career in academia, and why did you decide to pursue
teaching instead?
Before joining UNT, I worked as a researcher in planning organizations. I chose to
move into teaching because I enjoy working with students and discussing different
socio-economic topics with them.
When you’re not teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy watching movies and reading in my free time.
Do you have any fun facts that others may not know about you?
This is my first time living in Texas, and I'm really enjoying it!
