Social workers improve lives by helping individuals overcome challenges related to abuse, poverty, homelessness, addiction, disability, illness, and discrimination. They work in diverse fields, including healthcare, hospice, substance abuse treatment, child welfare, aging, criminal justice, and more.

What is Social Work?

At the core of social work is helping individuals overcome challenges such as abuse, poverty, homelessness, addiction, aging, disability, illness, and discrimination. Social workers are experts in ethics, human development, and behavior, equipped with the skills to assist others and address specific social issues like child abuse or homelessness. They serve in a variety of settings, including:

  • Child Welfare and Family Service Agencies
  • Hospitals or Hospice
  • Community Mental Health or Substance Abuse Treatment Centers
  • Retirement Centers, Skilled nursing centers (or other places that serve the needs of the elderly and their families)
  • Prisons and the Justice System
  • Schools and Community Programs

Ways Social Workers Support Their Clients

Social workers connect clients with vital resources and services, such as finding affordable housing for a struggling mother or securing a foster home for an abused child. Clinical social workers offer therapy to those facing personal challenges, mental illness, or addiction. Beyond direct client work, social workers also teach, conduct research, and contribute to societal improvement by developing and influencing public policy.

Advisors Shaping the Future of UNT's Social Work Program
Professionals from a number of local agencies and organizations serve as advisors to our Social Work program. They make suggestions on curriculum, instruct and guide students in field placements, and are a valuable source of information on trends in various practice areas of social work. Many members of the Advisory Council are UNT alumni.

This accreditation means that our program meets or exceeds strict academic standards for excellence in education. Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE accredited institution are eligible to become licensed social workers in the State of Texas.  In most cases, they are also eligible for "advanced standing" if they decide to purse a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW).  While details differ by graduate program, students with advanced standing are exempt from taking certain graduate classes. This enables them to earn an MSW in less time.
