Substance Use Disorder Treatment Undergraduate Certificate

The number of individuals diagnosed with substance use disorders continues to grow each year worldwide. Professionals in criminal justice agencies, schools, medical facilities, social welfare programs and private practice can benefit from learning about addiction. This certificate provides students with a general overview of substance use diagnosis, treatment options, and multiple pathways to recovery.
UNT also offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Studies, Bachelor's Degree in Addiction Studies, Minor in Addiction Studies and Minor in Rehabilitation Studies.
Required Courses
The substance use disorder treatment certificate requires the following classes:
- ADDS 4075 Drugs and Alcohol
Covers the psychological, biological and behavioral causes and effects of substance use and addiction with particular focus on the impact of alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, opiates, stimulants, depressants and hallucinogens on mind, body and behavior. - ADDS 4175 Addiction Counseling Theories
Treatment approaches such as 12-step programs, cognitive-behavioral self-control and motivational interviewing. - RHAB 4500 Assessment in Rehabilitation
Principles, techniques and procedures used in the assessment process in rehabilitation, including assessments related to identification of issues of addiction, vocational assessments and situational assessments. - ADDS 4675 Alcohol and Substance Use Competencies
Focuses on further familiarizing students with the core competencies necessary for effective interventions within addiction treatment settings and prepares students to apply these skills in substance use counseling practice.
