History of BAO: Pioneers in Distance Learning

In the late 1990s, Dr. Leslie Burkett and Dr. Sigrid Glenn led the way by developing the department's first distance learning course to demonstrate the feasibility of online education. Building on this success, Dr. Burkett collaborated with Dr. Janet Ellis to create a second course. Dr. Rick Smith followed with developing the third course, meeting the Behavior Analyst Certification Board’s (BACB) newly established "3-course sequence" requirement.

Subsequent courses were developed by dedicated faculty members including Susan Miller, Dr. Shahla Ala’i-Rosales, and Dr. Kenda Morrison, helping to expand and solidify the department’s distance learning offerings. Thanks to these early innovators and the ongoing contributions of our faculty, we have grown into one of the leading online programs in Applied Behavior Analysis today.

Our online program offers asynchronous courses leading to a Master of Arts (MA) degree or Graduate Academic Certificate (GAC) in Applied Behavior Analysis. When combined with supervised fieldwork that is obtained outside our program, you will be eligible to take the national Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA) exam administered by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB). Obtaining BCBA certification meets the criteria to become Texas Licensed Behavior Analysts (TX-LBA). If you are located outside of Texas, please refer to the US Licensure of Behavior Analysts section on the BACB website.
