Required Courses

Add to your Healthcare Administration Toolbox by enrolling in our Health Services Administration Certificate program. The program consists of 5 fully online courses, listed below with their course descriptions. Each course has an applied project that gives you the opportunity to practice tasks you may be expected to complete as a healthcare administrator:

  • HLSV 5450 Health Services Administration
    With the help of case studies, reviews the evolution of management in the healthcare industry, and provides management theory, principles, methods and tools for managers in a variety of healthcare delivery settings. Explores key roles in healthcare organizations, as well as project planning and execution, managing change, personnel management and ethics in the healthcare environment.
  • HLSV 5820 Marketing Health Services
    Reviews the legal, regulatory and economic forces that shape the marketing of health services in today’s environment. With the integration of real work organizational examples, students explore the evolution of healthcare marketing from strategies based on advertising and promotion to current strategies that incorporate research, education, and the responsibility to understand the market in which healthcare organizations operate, the customers served by such organizations, and the customer’s needs, wants, behaviors and motivations.
  • HLSV 5740 Financial Issues in Health Services Administration
    Presents a broad overview of healthcare finance and focuses on tasks that are essential to the operational management of healthcare services, including estimating costs and profits, planning and budgeting, analyzing new equipment purchases, using metrics to monitor operations, and working with financial statements. Designed for individuals seeking basic skills in healthcare financial management.
  • HLSV 5550 Health Insurance and Managed Care
    Understanding the health insurance sector is essential to understanding the business side of U.S. healthcare. This course provides an overview of the issues related to the management, design, regulation and evaluation of managed care plans. Covers both private and public insurance plans, such as Medicare and Medicaid. Describes the many changes to health insurance markets that have resulted from the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Other topics include: the history of managed care, health benefits coverage, provider networks, utilization management and quality management.
  • HLSV 5940 Health Services Administration Capstone
    Complete a full business plan for a healthcare organization as a member of a team and apply knowledge acquired through the certificate program to develop your business plan under faculty supervision.

Health Services Administration Certificate Application Process

Application Deadlines

The Health Services Administration Certificate has summer, fall and spring admissions. Applications are accepted and processed on a rolling basis throughout the semester. The application cycle for Summer 2023 will close on May 1, 2023. The application cycle for Fall 2023 will close on August 1, 2023.

Three-Step Application Process
The application process for the Health Services Administration certificate is a three-step process. The first two steps are completing two separate applications. After these applications have been processed, you may be invited to interview as part of the third step.


1. Application to Toulouse Graduate School

Applicants must apply to and be accepted by UNT’s Toulouse Graduate School. Applicants typically have a 3.0 GPA or higher on the last 60 undergraduate semester hours from their bachelor’s degree, or at least a 3.4 on a completed master’s degree. Applicants with lower GPAs may be considered by individual review. In order to apply to the graduate school, you will need to submit:

*All graduate applicants must meet the Toulouse Graduate School admission requirements, but most programs also have additional requirements and deadlines. Please see application steps 2 and 3.

2. Application to Rehabilitation and Health Services Department

Students must also apply to the department. Students can work on application steps 1 & 2 at the same time. Items you will need for step 2 to apply to the department include:

Your Self-Statement should be a double-spaced, typed essay outlining your academic interests, career goals, and how the program meets your needs. The statement and your resume will both need to be emailed to: hlsv-applications@unt.edu.

3. Interview with the Health Services Administration Faculty

Once the department has received all of your application materials, applicants may be contacted to set-up an admissions interview. Interviews will either be conducted over the phone or through Zoom. This program is offered entirely online.
