"Our joint-MSW with TWU was so successful that we had more student demand than capacity available in a combined program. As a student-centered university – and college – we made the exciting decision to launch an independent MSW so that we can accept more candidates into our cohorts." - Cassidy Baker, Department Chair

MSW MissionAccording to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, Social work is one of the fastest growing careers in the United States. In the U.S., approximately 63,800 openings for social workers are projected each year through 2032. The University of North Texas’ new independent Master of Social Work Degree Program is ready to prepare students to meet demand for these jobs in health and elder care, child and family services, mental health and other fast-growing areas.

“Our joint-MSW with TWU was so successful that we had more student demand than capacity available in a combined program. As a student-centered university – and college – we made the exciting decision to launch an independent MSW so that we can accept more candidates into our cohorts,” said Dr. Cassidy Baker, chair of the department. “We look forward to building on the strong reputation of our program to continue to graduate social workers who empower communities, individuals and groups to create positive changes.”

With the creation of this MSW, UNT will double enrollment in the program.

Two types of students will be admitted to the MSW:

  1. Graduates of undergraduate programs in fields other than social work who will complete the 60-hour Traditional Degree Program. In addition to conventional coursework, they will complete two full-time field practicum placements.
  2. Graduates of Bachelor of Social Work programs who qualify for the Advanced Standing Degree Program where the first 30 hours of the MSW is waived, and they will complete the program in one year. Only one full-time practicum placement is required for these students.

The degree integrates theoretical and methodological knowledge, as well as research and hands-on experience for a well-rounded education. The program's partnerships with agencies across the DFW area offer a variety of field placement experiences that will help students explore interests and expand beyond their current knowledge and skills.

“An advanced degree in social work will further our students’ careers and provide them with additional field and licensure opportunities,” said Dr. Rosalind Evans, clinical assistant professor & MSW director. “A priority for the program is to continue our strong partnerships with agencies and further develop our pipeline for career opportunities that have high employee investment for social workers in the field. We believe the program’s initiatives can empower our students to ignite change, pursue social justice and shape futures across the globe.”

The UNT MSW program was granted candidacy status by the Council of Social Work Education in July 2023 and is fully accredited. The first cohort of students began Fall 2024.
